God’s Word tell us of the many parallels between our lives on earth and Israel’s journey to the promised land. Hebrews 4:1 reminds us to be careful, lest we come short of it. These 5 elements can be identified in both their journey, as well as ours:
- The Divine Plan
- Human Rebellion
- Divine Punishment
- Divine Provision
- Divine Deliverance
THE DIVINE PLAN for the Hebrews was first revealed to Abraham, Genesis 15:13-14. For all of mankind, the plan was formed in Eternity Past, before the foundation of the world (Rev.13:8).
HUMAN REBELLION among the Hebrews started in Exo.14:11, before Egypt was out of sight, and came to a head in Num. 14. For all of mankind, it started in Eden, with the forbidden fruit.
DIVINE PUNISHMENT was dealt to the Hebrews through plagues, enemies, snakes and 40 years of delay and wandering. For all of us, it comes in the consequences of sin, both immediate and eternal.
DIVINE PROVISION for Israel was seen in manna, quail, water, healing and protection. For all of mankind, the greatest illustration of God’s provision is the church, purchased with Christ’s blood.
DIVINE DELIVERANCE for faithful Israel was realized in Canaan, the land that flowed with milk and honey – God’s rest. For all who faithfully follow God’s Plan now, Heaven is our rest. Therefore, let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience. Heb.4:11
