Robert Gaylor, retired former Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, is one of the most sought-after motivational speakers in Air Force circles. His down to earth approach, mixed with his leadership acumen, has inspired thousands of Airmen around the world.
One of the stories that has stuck with me for many years, is one he calls, “Because Our Name is on the Mailbox.” The story is about he and his neighbor, both older (nearing elderly status) outside working in their yards in the unbearable Texas summer heat. Both were lamenting to one another how much they disliked the work they were doing and how hard it was. Finally, after several minutes of complaining, the neighbor asked Robert, “Why exactly are we doing this?” His reply was simple, yet profound: “because our name is on the mailbox!” Translation: these yards are our responsibility and we can’t expect anyone else to take care of what is ours.
How can we relate this story to our Christian walk? Let’s say, metaphorically, we are the mailbox. Whose name is on our mailbox? Galatians 3: 27 says: For as many of you as were baptized into Christ, have put on Christ. As such, if we have obeyed the gospel, Christ’s name should be emblazoned in bold letters on our mailbox. Is that what the world sees or do they see other names on our mail box…worldliness, covetousness, lukewarmness, unfaithfulness, or a whole host of others? While this is a simple question, it has profound effects, not only on ourselves, but others as well.
What is our identity as a Christian? Is it one of faithfulness, obedience, and always striving to do right? Matt 6: 33. Is it one of apathy, going through the motions, not really giving a whole hearted effort? Rev 3: 15-16. Just as Robert’s yard showed the pride he took in keeping it in shape because his name was on the mailbox, our Christian identity will truly show if we are accountable and worthy of the name on the mailbox or if we are merely hiding behind a mailbox that belongs to someone else.
Whose name is on your mailbox?
