Earthen Vessels
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; 2 Corinthians 4:7
From examining the context surrounding that verse, it becomes clear that Paul is speaking in reference to the work and ministry of the apostles in the first century. He and those who helped him had been called into God’s service from a variety of trades, careers and experiences, fallible men who were entrusted with the great treasure of the Gospel of Christ. Their mission was to share it. In speaking to Ananias, God described Paul in that exact way: …for he is a chosen vessel unto Me, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings, and the children of Israel. (Acts 9:15)
You and I, too are vessels, potentially containing great heavenly treasure, and no doubt the basic reason for that is the same for us as for Paul: so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves. God’s will and power are demonstrated by changed lives that show proof every day that the best way to live is to live for Him.
But as we well know, daily living is not without its challenges and hurdles. Even in these modern times of luxury and comfort, there are bumps of every kind in the road. Though most of us will not suffer like an apostle in the first century (2 Cor.11:23-29), in our own way …we are afflicted…perplexed…persecuted…struck down…(2 Cor.4:8-9). As we endure hardship and trial, faithful in the Lord’s service, His greatness is seen through us, and He balances the hardship with blessing: afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed…
The result of all this is stated in verse 10 – always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. Clean, pure Christian living is a powerful demonstration of Jesus.
2 Timothy 2:21 says we should be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work. Even (or especially) in this difficult time, fill your vessel with the right treasure, and share it appropriately.
Hope you have a good day.
