Behind the Scenes

By David Phillips (Adapted from Tyler King’s article in Daily Bread, October 17, 2019)

Very likely, many of us have never considered all the little parts and pieces that have to come together in order for one of our worship services to happen. But by the time you walk in the door and grab your bulletin from the table, shake a hand or two and find your favorite seat, many hours of effort, by several different people have already been in motion. They’ve been planning, preparing and providing for the efforts needed in order for the entire group of worshipers to be properly equipped and taught and led through what many of us consider to be the most important thing we do regularly. Worshipping God sets the tone for the week, and it shouldn’t be done haphazardly.

Before we ever assemble for worship, the building has been cleaned and tidied, the yard brought into presentable condition, utility bills paid, thermostats adjusted, bulletin prepared, printed and put out for distribution. Those who are to lead the worship service have been notified in advance, because someone sat down a month ago and determined who would do what, in order that they could be ready. Classroom teachers have prepared their lessons and planned their activities. Song leaders have selected what we will sing, slides have been loaded and checked, announcements composed, recorders cued, sound system checked, prayers planned, and elements for the Lord’s Supper freshly made ready. Many of these things (actually most of them) are not done because someone is paid to do them, but rather they are done because someone loves the Lord and His worship. From time to time, something falls out of place, or fails to get done, or doesn’t work right. But even then, there is usually someone standing by with a backup, or the willingness to step in and do their best to handle a task on short notice.

However, in all of this we must remember that our worship services are not productions. They are family gatherings, for the purpose of praising and worshipping our Holy God, for learning more about Him, for remembering and celebrating the sacrifice of Jesus, and for strengthening and encouraging one another. Though our services are carefully planned, meticulously prepared, and carefully executed, no doubt some worshippers simply “go through the motions” with little or no heart involved. Perhaps you are one who hasn’t seen the need to participate or get involved. If so, you are missing out. Take an acknowledging look at all the effort that so many are putting into our worship services and Bible classes. If you’re a member of this church, your input and participation are needed! Remember, we’re a family, working together, working for God!
